Gwibber and localization (l10n)

So you’re in the microblog business? Or just a fan of this small and funny application called Gwibber?

Are you a translator? We got work for you!

From today (well, actually yesterday, but I didn’t have time to blog about it) translations for Gwibber are hosted on Launchpad and you can help this tiny microblog-application speaks your own language!

Keep in touch with your local translation team, help them and help this little application!

identi.ca e ubuntu-it

Per tutti gli amanti del micro-blog in ascolto: su identi.ca ho creato un gruppo denominato ubuntuit (non venite a lamentarvi per il logo, pare ci sia qualche problema con la resa a video da parte di identi.ca).

Cosa sono i gruppi nei micro-blog? Beh, assolutamente niente, servono solo a far arrivare i messaggi a tutti gli iscritti a quel gruppo, amici vostri o no. Una sorta di canale per mettersi in contatto con tutte le persone che usano/sfruttano/contribuiscono a Ubuntu in Italia.

A dire il vero credo sia solo identi.ca al momento a mettere a disposizione la possibilità di creare dei gruppi. Il funzionamento è comunque facile:

1. scrivete il vostro bel messaggino di 140 caratteri e da qualche parte nel messaggino infilateci !ubuntuit (con il punto esclamativo davanti e tutto attaccato)
2. in questo modo andrete a spammare tutti quelli che sono iscritti a quel gruppo

Of microblog and l10n

I like microblogging.

It all began with Twitter, as it was the only one around that I knew of, but when I discovered identi.ca, I made the switch.

Why we should prefer identi.ca over Twitter? Well, you don’t have to, but if you’re a FLOSS fan, at least you should. And I do.

identi.ca is free as in freedom, it runs the laconi.ca microblogging software released under the AGPL, you can post to Twitter trough it, for somebody it could probably be not as polished as Twitter (not for me, otherwise I wouldn’t have switched), but what I like it most is that it could “speak” your language too. Not Twitter.

I don’t mind if a program or a web page is in English, but I do mind if other people around the world could not use the same program I’m using only because it’s in English. English is only the 4th spoken language in the world (somebody at UDS told me English is “the first second known language”; BTW, thanks again for the stickers!), it’s the first language used on the Internet, but still not all the world could understand it.

From my point of view, a translator point of view, in these years, in the Internet/globalization era, not thinking about i18n and l10n aspects for a program/website/project since the beginning, is a wrong implementation. All these aspects should be discussed before the development starts, doing it after, could end out being “tricky”.

So, check out identi.ca, test if it speaks your language, if not, ping your translators team/group/project (almost every language has one group, being it under the GNOME, Ubuntu, Debian or Translation Project umbrella, that hopefully all share the same conventions) and ask them to help out or join the laconi.ca i18n mailing list!

Oh… and do this for all the programs/projects that are not “speaking” your own language, talk to your translators, help them!

Hmmm… probably this post should be localized in as many languages as possible for being of some use!

Visto che siamo ormai all’Epifania che tutte le feste si porta via, ecco una canzone che mi ha accompagnato per queste feste Natalizie, ecco, cantiamo tutti assieme:

Mi piace questa canzone… ovviamente però non nella placida e angelica versione che magari si sente cantare (e che stavate canticchiando) ai marciapiedi, agli angoli delle strade, innevati e congelati (sì perché pare che il “sale” lo gettino solo in strada, i marciapiedi sono praticamente delle piste di curling, per non parlare poi degli spazzaneve che la neve la spazzano dalla strada, ma la gettano sempre sui sopracitati marciapiedi) da simpatiche persone travestite (eh sì, sono dei travestiti) da Babbo Natale accompagnati da ignari giovani (che si stanno congelando i piedi) dai volti angelici con delle tintinirellanti campanelline nelle loro dolci manine. No, non quella versione, ma una versione un po’ più graffiante, quella cantata da Chuck Billy (Testament), con alla chitarra Scott Ian (Anthrax) e Jon Donais (Shadows Fall), Chris Wyse (The Cult) al basso e alla batteria John Tempesta (Testament, White Zombie e The Cult). Ecco, questa versione, con una voce che più che ricordare il Natale fa  pensare ai film dell’orrore, suonata a 200 battute al minuto, musicalmente più che le Porte del Paradiso ricorda i Cancelli dell’Inferno, con delle persone che anche se sembrano avere dei parrucconi da travestiti in testa non ce li hanno, sono proprio così loro (e non sono travestiti) e al posto di dolci manine hanno manone iper tattuate.

Uff… è ora di tornare alla normalità, le ferie stanno per finire… devo anche togliere il loop da quella canzone… ah, ci hanno messo nella newsletter internazionale per via dell’intervista di Fabio a RomaUno.
